Orange is the New Black

10 out of 10

Orange Is the New Black is an American comedy-drama series created by Jenji Kohan, creator of the Weeds, and produced by Tilted Productions in association with Lionsgate Television. The series is based on Piper Kerman's memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison. First released on Netflix on July 11, 2013, the series has received critical acclaim and earned 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for its first season.

The series stars Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Michael J. Harney, Michelle Hurst, Kate Mulgrew, Jason Biggs, Uzo Aduba, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, Taryn Manning, Selenis Leyva, Adrienne C. Moore, Dascha Polanco, Nick Sandow, Yael Stone, and Samira Wily. Available on Netflix or Amazon.

This is truly one of my favorite shows. It is a powerful, interesting, insightful, disturbing show about the experience of being in jail. If you are squeamish, you probably should avoid this show as it seems true to life as a convict. Definitely not for children.

The story of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money to her drug-dealing girlfriend.
